A New 7-Day Hiking Trail Opens in Italy’s Dolomites

Italy’s Dolomites are a bucket list destination for many, and now a new 105-mile hiking trail is adding to the appeal.

The Cammino Retico trail is named after the ancient Raeti people. To promote slow, sustainable tourism, the Italian government has introduced this scenic trail connecting remote villages in the Veneto and Trentino regions. It can be completed in seven days, allowing hikers to soak up Italy’s off-the-beaten-path landscapes while also getting a nice workout.

What’s the hike like?

The trail ranges from 400 to 1,450 meters above sea level, beginning and ending in Aune di Sovramonte near Belluno. It passes through 10 towns in the Tesino and Feltrino regions, winding through picturesque limestone peaks, valleys, and lakes. Along the way, hikers can visit historical sites like Monte Avena, the Pedavena Brewery for a refreshing beer, and the bicycle museum in Cesiomaggiore.

Where can hikers stay overnight?

Each night, hikers can stay in mountain communities, including the walled town of Feltre and the lakeside village of Arsiè, with 50 accommodation options along the route. Starting in 2025, a cyclist route will be introduced, and a traveler’s passport and diploma will be given to those who complete the trail.
