Vacation? What is that to Americans? Expedia’s 24th Annual Vacation Deprivation Report reveals that Americans are more vacation deprived than ever, with just 12 days off annually—the fewest among surveyed countries.
Since 2000, Expedia’s Vacation Deprivation study has assessed global work-life balance. In its 24th year, the survey revealed that 53% of Americans do not plan to use all their 12 vacation days this year. And, Americans are twice as likely as the global average to go a year or more without a vacation. Among those who didn’t use all their vacation days last year, the top reason was “life is too busy for vacation.”
Vacation tips from around the world
- Despite taking only one more day of vacation per year than Americans, Japanese respondents are still seven times more likely to go on a monthly vacation. It’s all because they make weekends count and take advantage of long weekends, federal holidays, and school closures to do short trips.
- French workers evenly spread their time off (30%) to avoid pressure from one big trip, unlike Americans who often leave days unused. Despite having a month off annually, France reports higher vacation deprivation (69%) than the US.
