Niantic reportedly in discussions to sell its gaming division to Scopely

Niantic, the developer behind popular augmented reality games like Pokémon Go, is reportedly in discussions to sell its gaming division to Scopely, a mobile game publisher controlled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The potential deal is valued at approximately $3.5 billion. If finalized, the transaction would include Pokémon Go and other mobile games developed by Niantic.

This move comes as Niantic has faced challenges in maintaining the success of Pokémon Go while struggling with other game launches and broader financial difficulties. The sale to Scopely, which has been expanding aggressively in the gaming sector with significant backing from the Saudi PIF, would mark a significant shift for Niantic. It could also raise questions about the implications of Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in the global gaming industry through investments and acquisitions.
