Taiwan’s ASE Technology, the world’s largest provider of outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing services, has officially launched its fifth plant in Penang, Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy. The new facility, located in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, is part of ASE’s largest overseas expansion effort to date and reflects the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for advanced semiconductor technologies.
Key Highlights of the New Plant
Expansion Scale: The new plant increases ASE’s total floor space in Malaysia from 1 million square feet to approximately 3.4 million square feet, more than tripling its capacity. This makes it a critical hub for the company’s global operations.
Investment and Employment: ASE has allocated RM4.5 billion for the development of its fourth and fifth plants in Penang. The company plans to double its current workforce in Malaysia—from over 3,000 employees—by adding 1,500 more staff over the next three to five years.
Smart Manufacturing: The facility integrates Industry 4.0 technologies, including Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) and factory automation solutions. These advancements will enhance productivity by enabling AI-driven anomaly detection, yield optimization, and data analytics for improved manufacturing processes.

Global Semiconductor Demand: The expansion comes at a time of surging demand for cutting-edge chips used in artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI (GenAI), and other advanced computing applications. This positions ASE to play a larger role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
