Thailand Extends Visa Program for Digital Nomads and Tourists

Thailand is seeking a major tourism boost with its recent approval for longer visa stay periods for tourists, postgraduate students, and digital nomads, along with improved visa conditions for retirees.

Though many digital nomad work in Thailand, the country does not have an official Digital Nomad visa. Up until now, remote workers have, instead, relied on short-term visas or the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa for nomads, which costs a whopping $13,060 per year.

Thailand Extends Visa Program for Digital Nomads and Tourists

Now, with the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), international travelers can receive a visa that is valid for five years and allows them to work for up to 180 days per stay. This is a far more generous time length given that, at present, stays are limited to only 60 days. Thailand is expected to start accepting DTV applications this July.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • 20 years of age or older
  • Savings of $13,632 (500,000 baht)
  • An application fee of around $268
  • Not working for a company based in Thailand
  • No income requirements

There are no income requirements to be met, and successful applicants can live and work comfortably in the country for up to 180 days. Those wishing to extend their stay can renew their visa for another 180 days for $268 within five years.

The DTV also allows holders to bring their legal dependents (under 20) and spouses with them. While the application is not available yet, Thai authorities will begin accepting applications in late June or early July this year, so keep your eyes peeled.
