In life, three things are certain: death, taxes, and ads. We cannot escape them, and now United Airlines is showing targeted ads on seat-back screens. But, the silver lining here is that there is a way to opt out if you don’t want to be overstimulated by consumerism.
The updates
United is launching the airline industry’s first-ever media network. This includes ads on seat-back screens as well as changes to its app.
Passengers scrolling through in-flight entertainment options will now see targeted ads customized based on their location and past travel destinations. Meanwhile, in the United Mobile App, new features are being added to help travelers save time. For instance, the carrier is making it easier to switch from a middle seat to a window or aisle as they become available, within the app.
Certainly, United’s update aims to increase revenue and offer passengers a personalized viewing experience. But, if you’re (understandably) weirded out by the airline using your data, United says it only uses information from passengers 18 and older and allows all customers to opt out anytime.
How do I opt out?
To opt out of targeted ads, visit United’s opt out page, select your state of residence, and provide your name, date of birth, phone number, and email. Once you’ve completed the form, United will process your opt out request. It’s important to note that residents in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and Utah may have additional opt out rights due to state laws.
