When is Total War Medieval 3 releasing and will it be on consoles?

Which Total War games are now DRM-free on GOG and is Denuvo gone?

Creative Assembly officially confirms the development of Total War: Medieval III. This announcement coincides with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The studio released a live-action teaser to mark the occasion. This news ends a significant waiting period for historical strategy fans. The previous entry, Medieval II: Total War, launched in 2006. That title maintains relevance today largely through extensive community support. Mods like Third Age Total War transformed the base game into a definitive Lord of the Rings experience, proving the setting’s enduring popularity.

New Engine and Console Expansion

The studio is building Medieval III on a new proprietary engine named “Warcore.” This technology represents a significant technical shift for the series. Warcore enables development across multiple platforms. Consequently, Creative Assembly plans to bring future titles to PlayStation and Xbox consoles. However, the project remains in early pre-production. Players should not expect a launch for several years.

Immediate Releases and Star Wars Rumors

Medieval III will not be the next playable title. Attention currently focuses on The Game Awards, scheduled for December 11. Credible reports from industry insiders suggest a different reveal is imminent. Leaks point toward a Total War: Star Wars announcement.

This potential release aligns with a broader resurgence in tactical sci-fi games. While many fans speculated about a Warhammer 40,000 adaptation, the Star Wars IP offers a distinct tactical landscape. This title would compete in a busy market alongside upcoming releases like Star Wars: Zero Company and Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War IV.

Preservation and DRM-Free Access

Creative Assembly has established a strategic partnership with GOG to support digital preservation. Several classic titles are available immediately on the GOG store without Digital Rights Management (DRM). These discounted collections include:

  • Rome: Total War Collection
  • SHOGUN: Total War Collection
  • Medieval: Total War Collection
  • Total War: MEDIEVAL II Definitive Edition

Modern entries will also join this catalog. Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES, ROME II – Emperor Edition, THREE KINGDOMS, and ATTILA are scheduled for future GOG release. This transition signifies the removal of Denuvo anti-tamper software from these specific versions, addressing long-standing performance and ownership concerns within the community.
